Can’t believe there will be Kenyan, R&B, Cajun, Korean, and Irish music plus a dance tent in my backyard in a few days! Not to mention all the wonderful food I plan to eat… Can’t wait!!!!
I love it all, I weave my way through it step by step. The the artisans and crafts. Love to talk to the people about how they make their wares. And the food – how to choose….!
But ultimatly I am always headed to the DANCE stage! The VIBE is amazing – watching Mum’s and Dad’s dancing with their kiddos – people of all ages – having the time of their lives with people they don’t know enjoying TOP NOTCH music! It is really something, right here in my very own home town – a treasure.
There are too many.. it’s hard to pick just one. Volunteering as part of the Sassy crew has been a genuine joy. From all of Johnny Hiland’s relatives (pretty much half of the County) and the little gramma from Canada who insisted she should be able to come back stage to see Le Vent du Nord because they were from Canada, too… the food (who doesn’t love Salmon on a Stick or Chowder from Or’s Island?)…. the Music… dancing… But, mostly I think it’s the lasting friendships I’ve made along the way. The Festival says Family to me. We are just one big happy family come festival time.
The festival was magical when it started. Now it’s too wonderful too miss! I used to interpret in American Sign Language for the festival. 3 years ago I moved to California but I’ve always had in my heart the community of volunteers, performers and music-lovers as family. This year I’ll be back on vacation in Bangor to listen, dance and give big hugs to friends.
AFF and Bangor-You rock!
Fantastic blog! I definitely love how it’s easy on my eyes as well as the details are well written. I am wondering how I can be notified whenever a new post has been made. I have subscribed to your rss feed which should do the trick! Have a nice day!
I for one quite liked the post
I love the music and the energy.
I love all the Businesses and foundations and individuals that make to financial piece happen
I love that it feels so comfortable that folks take naps right there on the grass.
I love that people bring their children
I especially love how after a year of planning to bringing the diversity of the world to Bangor, the end result is such a profoundly beautiful Community.
It is so important that people get to experience the worlds cultural variety in this way. It helps to balance our world view, it fosters the idea that we all have something of value to contribute and our differences are beautiful and amazing and nothing to fear or be hurtful to each other about.
May the weekend before Labor Day ALWAYS be the American Folk Festival.

My mom comes up from southern Maine every year and the Festival has become such a great time for making memories. Everyone is happy and smiling- we even get some Christmas Shopping done!
Our family has made this festival one of our family traditions.
We all enjoy the many different styles of music, arts/crafts.
The children’s area is full of exciting things for the kids to do.
I love all of the spontaneous dancing that happens at the Festival. What a fun and healthy way to spend a day or three! Last year I had a house full of friends from across the country and it was the best! Can’t wait for this year…
The food. Always great cuisine, and able to try something I have never had before.
I went with my friends and their young baby last year – what fun it was to sit on a blanket near the waterfront and enjoy the music!!
It’s always a great way to cap off the Summer. Great music and energy, great food and great people. Every year it gets better and better.
How can you not go to the American Folk Festival? There has been so much music that I would never otherwise have had a chance to hear! It is a unique experience that makes Bangor an even greater place to live!
Discovering Mainely Smoked Salmon (best AFF food!). Seeing (and meeting) Redd Volkaert, Bill Kirchen, Jerry Douglas, Dale Watson and Johnny Hiland. Great traditional country music every year at the AFF!
Interesting blog, not like the others! Good to see more people writing about this subject.

My happiness equation =
3 days of amazing world cultures + 1 shining sun + 1 beautiful Bangor waterfront!
My Friday evening happiness equation =
4 costumed Korean drummers dancing + 800 people clapping + 1 exotic food scented breeze
Being one of so many volunteers is my big thrill! I get to meet so many new people and check in with so many old friends. My girlfriend and her husband came over from Madison, Maine and it was so great to see them smiling at the great day thousands of us were having! They loved the mood, the music and fun as much as we did!
Our happiness equation is to see the “I kicked in” stickers (which means you put money in the kitty) on everyone’s shirt so we will know that this festival will be there next year. It’s the berries (as my mother-in-law would say) and Bangor is the best.
Peter and Carol, Bristol, Maine
My husband and I wish that you could get Eileen Ivers and her band to come to the festival. She does Irish fiddle playing but plays quite a variety of music and she is fabulous. I’m sure that she would draw a crowd and have everbody dancing!
We did enjoy the festival this year especially Le Vent Du Nord from Quebec. We have seen them before and do enjoy them alot.
Thanks so much for a wonderful time and the variety of music you had and it was great to see so many “I kicked in.” stickers on people’s shirts!

I wanted to compose you this tiny observation in order to thank you again for the great thoughts you have shown on this website. This is so seriously generous with people like you to allow unhampered all a number of people might have sold as an ebook to earn some profit on their own, especially since you could have tried it if you ever decided. Those secrets as well acted to provide a great way to realize that many people have the same keenness similar to my very own to realize many more when it comes to this matter. I know there are many more fun situations in the future for people who browse through your blog post.
